title = "Volume change behavior of an unsaturated soil - A numerical investigation",
abstract = "Terzaghi's one-dimensional consolidation theory has been successfully applied to the prediction of settlement due to the consolidation of saturated soil. As for the consolidation of unsaturated soil, Biot's consolidation theory may be used but it required the coupling of the equilibrium conditions of a stress field. A simpler solution that adopted the continuity equations of pore-water and pore-air may also be used. This study simulated the consolidation process of an unsaturated soil using the above continuity equations via a commercially available program. The result shows that it is necessary to simultaneously consider the movement or dissipation of the excess pore-water and pore-air generated during the consolidation process in order to obtain a good and comparable back analysis result.",
