Abstract

In recent years, the development of offshore wind farms has increasingly become larger in scale. The integration of large-scale wind farms increases the potential risk to the stable operation of power grids. One of the challenges comes from the possible switching overvoltage of the power system in offshore wind farms because insulation accidents caused by overvoltage have become one of the prominent issues in wind farms. This work discusses the simulation results obtained from a number of switching scenarios in planning Fuhai offshore wind farm in Taiwan. These switching scenarios include breaker closing or opining with wind-farm cable and substation transformer at noload conditions, breaker opining when single-phase or threephase faults appears in the cable of the offshore wind farm. According to the simulation results, the switching overvoltage protection scheme in Fuhai offshore wind farm will be proposed in this study.
