Removal of organic matter in sewage sludge by Fenton method

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaperpeer-review

Abstract

Sewage sludge generated after wastewater treatment represents an important challenge due to the large amounts produced and the need to adequately treat it. At present, the treatment of sewage sludge in Taiwan is mainly based on landfill method, and it is not environmentally friendly. The production of inorganic polymer is one of the methods to utilize the sewage sludge resources, but the organic matter content in the sewage sludge, which results in lower mechanical strength, is high. In this study, a method different from the usual incineration treatment of sewage sludge is proposed to remove organic matter in the aqueous phase by means of advanced wastewater treatment, Fenton method. The experimental conditions of the Fenton method, including H2O2 concentration, Fe2+ reagent concentration, reaction time and pH value, were discussed. In the experiment, we removed 82.67% of organic matter of sewage sludge at pH 7, with 5.15M H2O2 & 5.15mM FeSO42+, with 5g dry sample mixed with 200ml diluted water at 25 ℃.
