Abstract
Automated Dispensing Cabinet (ADC) is adopted by many hospital pharmacies due to its potential for reducing medication errors and enhancing the efficiency of medication administration. However, there are many ergonomic issues in current information displays for the ADC drug-refill task. In this study, a task analysis was conducted first to understand what information pharmacists need to perform the drug-refill task. The salience and layout of the displays were then redesigned based on pharmacists’ expectancies and values about the information. The major improvements of the information displays include the salience enhancement for the important information on the ADC overview display, the salience and layout rearrangement for the information on the list of to-be-refilled drugs, and additional trend lines on the drug consumption charts for more accurate predictions about the times to refill the drugs. An experiment will be designed to test the effectiveness of the new information displays.
