Formation and emission of metallic aerosols from incinerators

Abstract

An analysis of the formation and growth of metallic particles during incineration is studied. The first step is the entrainment of the metallic species from the waste stream into the gas phase. An equilibrium analysis is carried out to determine the partitioning of the metals amongst the various species. A lognormal, multicomponent model incorporating chemical reactions and aerosol growth dynamics was used to predict the evolution of the aerosol size distribution. The model was used to predict the aerosol size distributions in a lead-oxygen-chlorine system in a typical rotary kiln incinerator.
