Automated visual inspection for thermal fuse

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contributionpeer-review

Abstract

Automated visual inspection (AVI) has been a crucial tool for quality control in the last three decades. It alleviates human inspectors from those tedious routine tasks. In this study, we develop an automated visual inspection system for thermal fuses, which are important components for electrical devices. We proposed an effective inspection flow to detect four most commonly seen defects, including black-dot, small-head, and flake, in the production of thermal fuse for the case study company. Different numbers of defective samples were screened out from the production line and used to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed system. Currently, replacing four human inspectors, the proposed automated visual inspection system is practically operating in the case study company, for which it not only ensures the quality of the produced thermal fuses, but also saves at least $60,000 labor cost per year.
